Featured The Diplomat & The Rogue: Resin Chessmen?

I haven't played chess in 60 years, an' though it was a youthful fascination I was never remotely competent. But these two, an' another pair I'll post later, hold my interest for their uniquely accurate characterization of individuals...these 2 are apparently life-portraits. I have not found anything about the artist, Leigh Wright, who has copyrighted them in 1975.

The fellow on the left is marked Diplomat; his companion is Rogue...both markings crudely in black grease-pencil, an' certainly not by Leigh Wright. Whether those identifiers were assigned by Wright is a good question; Rogue is an anachronistic term, an' although Diplomat is not, the way both characters are dressed seems to put them in the 18th C, or before. Note the profound differences in their physiognomy. Which one of these men has never slopped hogs, nor slept in a barn?

I offer them here in the hopeful expectation that a goodly number of our members are serious students of the game, an' may have helpful ideas about these fellows, an' their creator.

I was in my middle school's chess club and still have a fascination with chess, though I don't play anymore because I find it too stressful... too much pressure.
But I love solving chess puzzles!
