Featured Teeny tiny Victorian brooch.

Paging @Jewelscollectingdust and others. This thing is tiny. The centre stone is a very good art glass or something the outer stones show as glass on a tester. Setting might be gold, not checked yet. Needs a better image of the centre stone.

I'm just intrigued by it and whether it's older than I think. Opinions?

 

Looks like an "evil eye".

 

Try searching peacock eye glass for the stone.

Really unusual hinge construction & very solidly built.

Depends on how old you think. Not earlier than Victorian.

It looks like it was cobbled together from a bunch of leftover scrap pieces from a jewelers bench.There is probably 5 times more solder holding it together than necessary.

I agree, and pretty late with that hinge. If the hinge is original, that is, which it looks to be. Original hinges on Victorian brooches were generally tubular.
The round hinge was used on a large scale in the 1920s, but it was already used before then. This looks like an early version, so maybe it is late Victorian or Edwardian.

You might want to check the two outer claws of the mount of the small stone upper left in the first photo, 10 o'clock, they look a bit too open.

Part of the hinge is similar,but the pin part is very different.

 

I agree, and it is the pin part that is unusual on obb's brooch.

I'm uncertain exactly when Brass & Glass was popularly designed and manufactured.

But you indicated the hinge was used prominently from 1920s on, which is where I'd guess it to fall (as a starting point). So in my mind older, but not Edwardian...

Best guess - but youse guys may be able to pinpoint older by the pin

(In case someone with even less exposure than I've had is thinking "Brass & Glass" sounds like junk, it's very collectible - and a lot of fun to discover)

Absolutely right! And this brooch is a looker, in more ways than one.

 

I've had that hinge on late 19th C stuff - and the long pin suggests that sort of date. But I'm wondering if it was once an earring that got converted. For such a wee thing, it has a very well done setting indeed.

Centre stone on mine absolutely glows, it's better than the ones you guys found.

No marks on it, I've gone all over. If it is brass, it's been gold plated, too. No wear, no verdigris.

I think it was worth two dollars.

 

I noticed that, it is in very good condition. Maybe hardly been worn.
