    Greetings, Kate. I suspect the letters are in different alphabet = possibly Hebrew ?

    @komokwa What are your thoughts?

    Yes, to state the obvious... That doesn't say Taxco as it should.

    It looks Hebrew to me too.

    It is Hebrew, a fairly early Israeli brooch in a general Eastern Mediterranean style. Israel means it is not antique, just like most Taxco silver isn't. The fineness is 935, a bit higher than sterling.

    I would think 1950s. Israel was founded in 1948.
    The style is of the region, so I would think made by someone born in the Eastern Mediterranean, possibly born in Palestine (pre-Israel).

    The State of Israel. Used in opposition to the commonly used Eretz Yisrael, which translates as The Land of Israel. Medinat Yisrael means the Modern State of Israel.

    so...after 48..

    Wow, you are all incredibly smart and knowledgeable! Thank you! I should have said it was a lot of Taxco “type” items (not all Taxco, obviously). My apologies for the misstatement.

    I thought it looked Hebrew, but I was afraid to say that and sound completely daft if I was wrong. :) I so appreciate all of you. Does anyone know what it says in Hebrew?

    Again, my sincerest thanks.

    It is not Bezalel work. Second word may be Israel.

    Medinat Yisrael

    I'm sorry.....maybe I wasn't clear on that.

    Modern State of Israel seems like something Israelis would have used in the earlier years of the state, to make the point about its being an independent nation, but do you know if in general they've continued to make that distinction in ordinary usage? I'm just thinking that it could be confirmation of Any Jewelry's dating to the early years of Israel. Not that I've seen a huge lot of Israeli jewellery, but I've seen some, never any marked quite like this. Often marked Jerusalem in either English or Hebrew.

    I did a google search " translate written Hebrew to English" and several websites that translate online appeared as well as a Hebrew/English translator app in google play;

    You can also get an on line Hebrew keyboard that lets you put what you see into type, allowing you to cut & paste into a translator.
