This bolo tie just came in, and I am trying to find out the name of the artist, and verify its presumed Zuni origin. It has the iconic Sunface design, with initials on the back "EE", followed by a smaller mark that looks like a teepee. My colleague has checked one site so far with Zuni artists, but didn't find anything, so I am hoping someone here may have some ideas. Thank you for any help! ... Dave
no Zuni signed with an electric pencil, what appears to be an older low quality tourist piece.......but yes ...still Zuni. the marks are likely pawn shop marks...
Here's a variety of similar... just for comparison. https://www.bing.com/images/search?...&iss=VSI&selectedIndex=4&count=35&adlt=strict
The blue and green stones are turquoise, some of which has either gotten wet or been hit with some sort of oils. The black is onyx or apache tear (obsidian). The white is mother of pearl and the orange is spiny oyster. Zuni for certain, but Southwestern for Ebay purposes. No clue whodunnit.
The EE is the artisan mark, not anything else. There are plenty of known Zuni marks made with an electric engraver.
Trying to educate myself, too. Was looking up Edaakie on Ebay, several were stamped but noticed others were only signed with what looked like an electric engraver. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Der...217432?hash=item51e0e15f98:g:xugAAOSwezVW01v~ http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Eda...092315?hash=item2377e10a5b:g:5psAAOSw9IpXw1fD This last one is engraved "EE", attributed to Emma Edaakie, but the EE's look different than Gimbler's piece. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NATIVE-ZUNI...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
You'll pardon me but that last one does not show the signature dots of an electric pencil, and as you say the EE bears no resemblance to the OP 's mark, nor does the quality or type of workmanship of the pin. The first link indeed shows an electric pencil use....but the siggy could not be more different. The 2nd link , again shows the same long signature, and workmanship of a high caliber....and in my experience bears no similarity to the OP's offering.
But at least you've been further educated and my point was to do just that for the OP and anyone else reading this thread that didn't already know about engraved marks.
Point taken.... although I still maintain that on this older piece, the EE is not that artists signature.
I thought of them also. Wright's Hallmarks of the Southwest, p. 63, only has Evangelita Edaakie's as that family's possible EE mark. It says this about her mark: "Stamped surname in 1/16 Gothic print first used in 1975." Zuni. The only EE I could find in this book is for Etta Endito, Navajo. Says her mark is "stamped initials in 1/16 Gothic." Her mark is pictured on the following page under the "E" section, 5th row, 1st column. http://www.art-amerindien.com/signature_bijoux_amerindiens.htm#e Earrings by Earlene Edaakie written "EE Zuni"with engraving pen. https://www.rubylane.com/item/384376-28072/Native-American-Zuni-Inlaid-Indian-Chief?search=1 The following page has engraved pencil artist sigs. about 23th down. There may be others on the page? http://data.perrynulltrading.com/hallmark/ --- Susan
