Hello all - I purchased this cylinder seal recently. It's about an inch tall and has initials at the top. Do you think this is real?

My thought that if it is real the initials were an unfortunate, recent addition.

    JMHO.
when you're not in the vicinity of Chicago, London, Paris etc. then I'd lend a bit of Plasticine or play dough from the children and have a look in the Wiki in different languages like French, German, English etc. if the show some similar figures.
the AAR on top is certainly a mark of a collection.

Unfortunately we have no Sumeriologists or Assyriologists on the forum. You need one to tell you if the configuration and style of the figures, the stone used, and the carving technique are genuine. Even good fakes often have a configuration or grouping together of figures that doesn't make sense to an expert.
I advise you to contact a museum. They can usually tell if a seal is fake just by looking at photos. A plasticene roll-out will help too.

I am no expert, but the fritting on the edges of the carvings looks suspicious to me. They should be rubbed smooth due to age, imo.
You can compare the edges with the ones on this site:
    http://www.olafsprenger.de/seal-gallery.html
The site is in English, but originally German. The 'weiter' button on the bottom of the page takes you to the following page, with more seals.
Olaf Sprenger also has a fake seals gallery, which serves as a warning:
    http://www.olafsprenger.de/fake-gallery.html

Seals are relatively easy to make, so unfortunately often faked. There are more here, an excellent site on all sorts of antiquities fakes:
