I’m asking if this sketch, the subject or any of the written information is familiar to anyone here?

This sketch I think it came from Butterfields auctioneers that looks like a study for a larger work, it is 7”X10” the information on the bottom was attached to this sketch on another paper.

There is some additional writing on the back of the second sheet

A google search provided this, the rocky coast line has some similarity? IMG_2024-07-15-183525.png

I was just now reading something about this being destroyed by erosion, was this area of some notoriety?

The name on the back looks like Art Langer? I don’t see any google hits for that name, I’m spelling it wrong or could that be someone who possessed this at some time?

I see Langon, but a search using that spelling doesn't yield results either.

    Is this of
the Edward Lear I posted said something about typical notations about location information similar to his but I don’t know if that means anything but the similarity is interesting but I guess this spot must have been of some artistic inspiration?

The two figures in the foreground are wearing tailcoats, which appear to have nipped in waists, as daytime wear, trousers and caps so likely early Victorian, the Romantic era. The other figure climbing the cliff appears to be wearing a gibrus. I read "Art Langan" too but it's in a much later hand and the notation reads like commercial instructions so he may not be traceable.

I’m not sure when this was destroyed by erosion but before the amusement park was built or did the two coexist for some time?

im amazed at what you were able to read from those details you added, I didn’t see any of that…

    the artist is very accomplished.

Ah, the amusement park opened in 1843 so this is likely an early sketch.

    Nice sketch, Desertau.

    On the back I read:
    Return
    Art Langan (owner? giftee?)
Hand off with card (meaning business card?)

    Ditto.

I’m not sure but I read “Hand off With Care” underlined for effect

on the front of the second page after Blackgang Chine from the West is this; IMG_2024-07-16-032253.png
Could this be an artists signature.

Not, alas, a signature but "I of Wight".

I sent this to Christie’s this morning but with the artist “Unknown” I doubt they will take the time to research unless it is blatantly obvious who the sketch is from?

    You are probably right.;)
Yes, short for Isle of Wight, an island off the south coast of England, popular with 19th century tourists. Anund already hinted at it.
