Stoneware Crock

    This is a wild guess, but often a number mark on the outside of a jar or crock or butter churn, etc., indicates the capacity. Could XV mean possibly 15 quarts? That would be 3-3/4 gallons, I believe.

    It looks like it might hold that much liquid, depending on how much space is inside / how thin the walls are.
