There are some writings on the black backing paper.
By Anote? May Holliday, Codetown... The red stamp is on the stretcher bar.
I think it is nicely done but not finding anything on the artist.

    Thanks for the comment.
I opened the back but no additional info.
The stretcher bar is marked O.F. Anderson, Co.
Olaf Anderson opened the company in 1904 in Brooklyn, NY. Then he moved to Glendale, New York (don't know when exactly). The company was incorporated in 1934 and renamed Anco Wood Specialties.

So, the stretchers have to be from the early 1900's. Do you think they are original with the painting?
Any clue on the first name. And where is Codetown?
    Holliday only confuses google.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Are you sure it says Codetown? It looks very unclear, but you have it in hand so may be more sure about that.

At least I see it this way. But then there is something at the end I can't make out.

Does it have parentheses around the whole thing, and a question mark at the end? Also, after the "own" it appears that there are more letters ...

It does have parentheses but not sure if the last is a question mark.
Thanks for the link Cheryl. If the painting is from around the same time as the stretchers then it is a good possibility that this is the same Annie May Holliday from the early Athens Art Association. I will email them and see if they can confirm that.

That looks like an older canvas and would date to the same period or earlier than the stretcher. Older canvas is darker in color and has a rough, loose weave compared to modern canvas with a tight weave and white color.

Annie May Holliday was born Mar 6, 1887 in Athens, Georgia and apparently lived there her entire life. She was an art teacher at Athens State Teachers College. She died Dec 27, 1972.

    She never married.

The answer from the Association is that she was a member till 1972 but their records don't go back any further and none of the current members knew her.

She was an Athens Ga. artist and my grandparents and mother knew her. I have one of her paintings as well

Annie May was my great aunt - my grandfather's sister. We have many of her paintings.
