Brooch £8 from Charity shop, 5cm wide x4cm. I thought it was worth buying even though there’s a slight blemish which looks like part of the stone structure rather than a crack. Could the middle be some sort of fossil? It really sparkles when exposed to light behind it so had to buy it for the sparkles! Would it still be called banded agate even though there’s very little banding? Thanks for any help.

It appears to be a slice from a geode nodule that has grown in completely with crystals inside. Have never seen one polished flat like this. The stone surrounding the crystals is banded agate.

My take on the piece is Geode...but I am truly ignorant about stones an' earth materials. Sweet brooch!

Thanks Bronwen and wlwhittier, I’ve found another online using geode in the description. This brooch really needs a little light behind it when worn, it would really make it look terrific.

Maybe use a kyratango trick & use aluminum foil to back it. ;)

The foil helps a bit, thanks.

I'm sure y'all have noticed the remarkably well-wrought setting around the stone...it appears to be, judging by that workmanship, fairly old...an' probably European in origin. Really fine, to my eyes!

Yes, strongly constructed. I would say late 19th century, English.

I do love solid settings like these, with Georgian pieces I love the backs as much as the fronts! Lovely brooch and a very sympathetic setting.

Agree, 1890-1900ish and very likely British.

...as would anyone with even one good eye!

I don't consider myself to have a "good eye" as far as jewelry is concerned, but I would have bought this one just for its construction & what I have learned along the way from the eBay boards & this forum.:happy::happy:

Jewelry falls into the category of knowing enough to be considered dangerous. ;):hilarious::hilarious:
