Featured Sterling Silver Retractable Razor Strop (Restoration Project)

Arrived in the mail today. Here's the "BEFORE" images.

The hallmarks are for Birmingham, 1924. Makes it 96 years old.

I have seen a lot of retractable razor-strops in my time, but I've NEVER seen one made of sterling silver. Up til now, they've always been some variety of silver-plate, so I imagine that this one must have at least some degree of rarity to it.

The finished product. I used the original strop-leather as a template to cut a new strop from some leather I already had on hand, which was of a similar thickness and finish to the original.

I also finished it off by cutting and sewing on a new pull-tab at the end of the strop.

The spring is nearly 100 years old, but as you can see - it still does a pretty good job of yoinking everything back inside when you let go of it!

Reminds me of watching my Grandfather when I was very young. I was fascinated with watching him use his strop and then chasing me out of the bathroom with the razor.

 

Yeah, I'm sure that didn't leave any lasting effects at all, did it?
