Steel Hinges.. is there a name for this type?

    I've not seen a hinge like this, no idea if it's old or new, or if it has a particular use or name. Please help! thanks!! hinge.jpg

    We used to call them rat tail hinges.

    That is correct, rat tail hinge, popular in 18th century america for cabinets. If hinge is steel then no, it's not old, period hinges were iron & forged by a blacksmith.

    You see these hinges often on small wall hung cabs in the 18th century, particularly in PA. Period wall hung cupboards with decorative hardware usually go for BIG BUCKS! at auction. Here is a period example with rat tail hinge, went for 20k at auction at Pook few years ago.
