Greek. Probably a repro of a statue, I suspect it may be Hermes, he was winged.

    Hola, and welcome, mj!
I was going to guess Mercury.
Unless you have access to radiocarbon dating... I bet a geologist or other expert could examine the extent and type of wear/weathering for you. I've been know just to make a cold call on a professor or official and ask them to take a look at this or that. Academics and government officials are usually very gracious...
MAYBE somebody here could use some close-ups, plus photos of reverse and sides, to evaluate it further...

It looks like something youd see on a 18th century tombstone carving, doesnt it ?

It looks like it's made of some kind of weathered metal. Brass? Bronze? Four rusted iron screws or nails...? Any idea what it was originally attached to?
Gila is right. More pictures! Better light and focus, too, please.;):p:D

I'm assuming (I can afford to ;)) that it's metal. To what is it nailed? Any special meaning, layout, overall purpose to the background?
Then I went back and kinda thought it could maybe possibly resemble a cousin to cement. Please confirm my first assumption.

My first guess was Mercury / Hermes Greek god , but no hat to hold the wings. If those aren't wings, growing out of his head, what else might they be?

Okay, here's another one to add to the list of mythology characters with wings on the head.

After image searching, I see Medusa is depicted with wings on her head, too.

Also, I see alot of these face mask things called bronze applique heads.

I've been imagining yours to be life size, but since I've now seen some as tiny as a fingertip, I need to ask measurements.

Hypnos, Gila? Don't recall that one, but now know where hypnosis came from. I wonder if it hurts him to fly?????

Laura, I've never seen Medusa with hair. Maybe I just don't look at her closely. She ain't my favorite.

Let's see if mjas comes back before 2016.

Hypnos was apparently the God of Sleep, and that link I posted shows him and some other possible suspects...

Edit - Hey, OG... you got a haircut!

Yes, much, much, much warmer than normal. Had to get rid of the fur coat. Probably will be back in a few weeks.
