I've never had any of these before either real or reproduction.

I found this pair hidden away in a collapsed built in closet of the latest clearance, they were wrapped in perished brown paper and were lucky to survive as lots of heavy books and brochures had fallen on them.
Judging by the dates on the brochures I would estimate they have been in there since the mid 50's

    Looking at this website
    https://www.realorrepro.com/article/Staffordshire-Dogs

I've convinced myself mine fit the criteria as being real.

They are not identical, they have slight variation in size, painting, mold detail and signs of normal wear.

Firing holes average about one-eighth inch in diameter.

There is evidence of glaze frizzle bumps and pitting on the base.

There are remains of paint on the backs.

Of course the website might be totally wrong as we well know from people Googling and Binging and taking the first thing they see as gospel.

    What you say ?

I am no expert, but either way they are very nicely made.

I think later ones, as in late 19th/early 20th.

With my limited knowledge I was going to say probably Edwardian.
    I think they're awful BTW :hilarious::hilarious::hilarious:

Someone will want them. Not as valuable as they once were, although the 18th C ones have a following.

Oh thank goodness, it's not just me. Yay, someone who will call out ugly pottery, LOL!

In your second photo of the dogs' backs, the one on the left seems unfinished, especially the foot. And the dog hair doesn't seem as thick and wavy. Was this production pottery of its day? Bought on the side of the road from a bloke in a shed?

My girlfriend's mother used to tell me that about Roseville Pottery. "I used to buy it from roadside stands on the way to Zanesville!" She thought it cost too much when it became collectible.

    No, it isn't.;)
But I don't like Staffordshire dogs anyway, so I don't count.

Nice examples whether you like them or not. Late c19 I would think.

I'm no expert, but they're not 1950s Italian anyway. Not my thing either.

I sold a pair of nice-ish vintage English repros recently. They got a lot of attention and sold quickly.

How exciting to find these by chance and it's so lovely that you rescued them unharmed. Whether people are charmed by them or not doesn't matter. It's worth trying to find out the date and repro/real status. I've never heard of these dogs so I've learned something from your post :)

    Thanks all for your help.

I'll either store them in my personal storage cabinet or store them away in the many crates I have of antique and collectable pottery.

I have about 15 crates of Doulton,Crown Derby, Wedgwood, Hornsea, Beswick, Poole, Lladro. etc.
I don't like taking pottery to sales or putting them on eBay.
I will probably put them in an auction when I retire which might be 5 years from now or 20 years from now, who knows.:D

Personally don’t like them at all. But it is still a cool ‘find/rescue story’ and they at least have some
history and value. I was “forced”to buy a fairly ‘new’ dog statue and cat statue (hate it... big and real ugly) last week as part of a job-lot...

My basement is chockablock with my retirement investments... which is 6 years away, for me. I had thought I'd spend my declining years listing each thing on eBay but your idea of an auction is much better.

A nice display; I agree they look good situated at floor level, a rare trait for ceramics and one of advantages these dogs possess :)
