Not sure what to call this vase shape... squashed...moon...discus??
Been trying to determine if it was made last Thursday in China or some time last century and noticed the dog had a tag on its collar. Seem to recall dog tags turned up around late Victorian times. Is that correct? I figure the image is probably from a renown painting as there appears to be a signature in the bottom left area of the image that I can't decipher. Not sure how the image was applied either. It seems to be a silver layer that has been scratched back to base material. Most likely a commercial process of some kind. Base is kind of interesting too with lots of firing support points.
    Any thoughts on it??
    Cheers
    Stephen

I think "moon" but that's only because I think I've seen that here before. The signature looks like L. Girod (or Gerod?) French name?

    L. Gerod, I think.

Addition: Found this Girod. Not the maker of the vase, but at least shows it's a working name: http://fireandfibers.com/

    I thought (a bit askew)
    D. Girod.
But I’m a bit askew! :wacky:

The decoration looks like a transfer print of an etching. Girod may be the original etcher.

My thoughts turned that way, but so far no luck finding a Girod with right style.

What exactly is going on in that picture? Am I wrong that the retriever-type dog approaching the bulldoggy ones is female?

It looked female to me but what the heck is going on and why anyone would create such an image is beyond me.

Another term for the shape seems to be 'pilgrim bottle'.

Googling "Girod etcher" turned up several early 19th century prints in the British Museum, with Claude Francois Girod-Lambert credited as the "intermediary draughtsman". He signed his work as "Deßiné par Girod". He may not have been the original artist, but the one who translated an original work into an etching for reproduction.

I saw those. He is described as the 'intermediary draghtsman', evidently making a drawing of the painting that the etcher could use to do his work. He didn't exactly sign himself that way; the printer gave him credit for his role as dessiné par Girod - designed by Girod. Does seem though, that he was known in his field simply as Girod, so possible he signed himself that way too. His dates put him mainly in the 18th century.

Similar? Same! So not Torquay, as other seller had been told. Some disagreement on barbatine/barboytine. Seller explained a little bit more here:

    Another tidbit on the shape:

I was getting right back to you, but got caught up following the Vallauris Massier scent. There were several members of the Massier family who designed Vallauris pottery. The 1st dibs pieces do not look like anything else I could find attributed to any of them.
