I have found this item listed as a spoon rest and elsewhere a toothpick holder...but to me it looks like a business card holder. On the ends it says "Autobahn Rasthaus Leipheim" which translated is " highway roadhouse in Leipheim " Germany. Any opinion on what it REALLY is?

This is what i found with a picture of a similar item on Ebay....I so disagree with their listing....i will go with business card holder...

    Vintage Spoon Holder/Rest

    Bauscher Weiden Germany

For your consideration is this vintage spoon holder or rest from Bauscher Weiden HW. It is white and is made of porcelain. It measure Approx 1.5" tall x approx 4.5" wide, and has a approx 1" opening to rest the spoon handle on. It is marked in green Bauscher Weiden HW on the bottom. This was found at an estate sale sitting on a shelf with a bunch of tea pots and a few other vintage spoon rests from Germany. This is a used item in good condition. There are no chips, cracks or crazing to the piece. There is some light wear to the base from sitting on the shelf. Please look at all photos and ask all questions before purchasing.

Whoever wrote that doesn't understand the purpose and use of an actual spoon rest. It isn't the handle that needs "resting." Just because something is "next to" something you do recognize does not make it the same thing.

I'm going to agree with George. I think it's for toothpicks.

The "Autobahn Rasthaus Leipheim" looks to be like an old-style highway rest stop in the US: a place to grab a quick meal while on the road.

    Here's a picture postcard photo:
    Leipheim-Autobahn-Rasthaus-Motel.jpg

The postcard says "Rasthaus + Motel" on the back.

My guess is that the object in question is a toothpick holder from the restaurant.

I am happy to inform you that the theft of their treasured toothpick holder hasn't led to bankrupcy for the Autobahn Rasthaus Leipheim. They managed to overcome the financial and emotional burden and have even rebuilt the place, adding a special water feature to deter any porcelain thieves:

The NTHCS National Toothpick Holder Collectors Society would call it a Sanitary Toothpick Holder. Many were made in china and glass in the US, the Sanitary part comes when you pick up the toothpick in the middle, not on either end.
