Yes I needed a large space taker HugeFruitBowl1.jpg HugeFruitBowl2.jpg HugeFruitBowl3.jpg Japanese fruit bowl and a local antiques store was going out of biz. I love the cobalt blue and the oyster-clam shell colors. I also show the bottom..

I want to point out that the mark was removed from the bottom of the piece. I have no way to know if the mold was altered to obscure the mark, or if it happened before the final glaze, but it's gone. Any guess as to the maker or period?

Whenever I see a mark removed, such as this, I think something "fake" happened. Thoughts?

Huh. I thought it was just a poorly impressed mark.

It was a lovely but small pineapple, a half-size one.

I wish the mark was just poorly impressed Kent, but the outer edge of the box around the mark is completely intact and the center removed. Thanks for looking.

Whereas often ceramic molds in the United States were brought around to various companies and used by other companies, and sometimes the maker's mark was surreptitiously removed - did this also happen in Japan?

I don't think the mark was surreptitiously removed. It doesn't look like it was ground off but rather hidden by the glaze. Perhaps the center of the mark was worn down? Or perhaps the dish didn't meet quality standards for the artist so they threw it in the made in Japan export pile. I've pretty much given up trying to look up some of these chop marks. The ones I find basically say "Nippon" anyway. It is a beautiful bowl.

Thanks for your input, Don. I like the thought that it was done because it's an export. The glaze is beautiful and it's about 22" wide, a perfect Hawaiian fruit bowl!

I love blue & white and sea themed, so it's a winner in my opinion! Not that my opinion counts for much.
