    Hey all,

I wanted to get people's opinion on to if this cabinet photo is original or not.

I pulled it from an entire album i bought at a flea market in New Hampshire. There is only minor staining and only minor edge wear.

I don't ever want to market something as genuine if it's not, so I'm just wondering if it's legitimate.

Thank you again! I appreciate it!

    Warm Regards,
    Jon

By "legitimate" do you mean actually taken at the site rather than in a studio set up to replicate the view?

I mean legitimate as, was an original photo. Not some copy, or some reproduction that an individual reproduced in order to deceive. Usually the weight of the card is how I determine this, as newer fakes weight more than the older ones. But this one seems to be the correct weight. I just wanted to get opinions! :)

Well, you're the only one who has it "in hand" to judge the weight, so......

At least the photographer information on the back matches the location of the scene.

haha true true, but some photo collectors have a much better eye than I! I really appreciate the replies. I've only been dealing in photos for about 2 years, so I'm not always 100% confident in my purchases. :)

I would worry only if the cabinet card were of a civil war soldier,Pres,or other rare or highly collectable piece, then it could in fact be altered.;)

100% I don't think the individual is anyone special, just a man possibly on a trip. So nothing spectacular besides the location :) Thank you for the help! I really appreciate it!

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Cool -- It looks old, just from the photos you've provided. Do you have a flatbed scanner? It's a lot easier to tell about photos if they are scanned.

Unfortunately I don't. I could use one though. I may have to invest in one. It looks normal to me, and it came out of an album with generic cabinet photos. So I'm thinking it's legitimate. But just wanted to see if other eyes thought the same! Sorry I couldn't be of more help with a scan! I really appreciate the help!

I have a 3-in-1 scanner/printer/copier at home, and I just use the scanner in that.

I also think it is the real deal. Several of these type of pics of rocky outlooks were taken in the late 1800s at Lookout Mountain. Found the following on the Hardy boys, Hardie Brothers Photographers, on the Univ. of Tennessee Chattanooga Campus website. It seems the Hardies did a Pictorial Guide book of Lookout Mountain in 1892. The guide book was found by the University in 2012. The webpage has a couple of pictures of the book. When the webpage was created the University said they planned to "digitize all of the pictures from this small booklet sometime in the future." If the pictures have been digitzed, they aren't online yet.

BTW, the site says the Hardie Brothers "operated a photography studio on Lookout Mountain in the last 1900s." Here a pic of one of Hardie brothers on the porch of their studio hanging off the edge og Lookout Mt.

Ladybranch, I think someone at the UTC education library didn't proof the wording in the description of the book -- ". . . operated a photography studio on Lookout Mountain in the last 1900s."

Probably should read "late 1800s" -- do you agree?

Thank you so much for all of your help! We did some research on the site and the folks who took it. Like you've said, they seem to have done many photos in that area. Thank you for the links! Those helped greatly! I really appreciate all of your help.

Yourturntoloveit, I think you are correct, someone did not proofread. :)
