I was at a friend's today and she was telling me a story a friend told her.

He is a builder. For 40+ years he was married to a woman who has issues like agoraphobia. He loved her dearly and because of his devotion to her he didn't venture far from home, he spent all his free time taking care of her in their tiny cottage, they had no children.

She passed away a few years ago, he has reached out and since remarried. He wanted to give a piece of jewelry to his new wife that belonged to his 1st wife. She said "We should have someone look at this". They did and it was recommended they have a local auctioneer (very reputable) come look also. He came and noticed some mobiles and small sculptures around the house, and said "You need to call the Whitney."

The Whitney came and said "You need to call these people..." Yes, they had a bunch of Calders. Tiny ones, big ones and ones in-between. His first wife grew up in CT next door to Calder and he gave her some pieces. He also gave some to her mother and when she died they were passed on to the daughter. They always had them, they were just hanging around the house! The Calder Foundation came and verified the pieces are genuine.

So they sold the large one which allowed them to sell their tiny cottage and buy a beautiful new house. They still have all the other pieces.

I was amazed, and also very happy for them. I have met them both and they are very nice people :) I was also amazed they kept this quiet, and happy they were able to. I hope they enjoy them for many years to come!

That is a wonderful story Marie. It sounds like they really deserved this bit of good luck. And good to know the first wife was at least able to enjoy the Calders while her affliction kept her confined to the house.

Now that's what I call a happy ending. Agoraphobia sucks. Being surrounded by Calders doesn't.

What a great story. I know a local person who inherited a painting from a family friend that looked very much like it was a Pollock. They were having it appraised and then I didn't hear any more about it, so I'm going to imagine that it was or he'd have given me the bad news. The elderly owner of the painting lived in upstate NY in the same town as Pollock so there's a good chance it was.

I agree, she just kept digging despite what "the experts" were telling her!
