Looks a bit like Jefferson Davis, but then again it could be a young Billy Gibbons!

My vote is for a young Billy Gibbons.:pompous:
Not Rasputin, who was much more intimidating.:nailbiting:

    John Lorimer Worden ??

Although he was never out of uniform and wore his hair behind his ear and his nose is not quite as sharp. It cannot be Jefferson Davis as his face was different with a very high pronounced cheekbone.

My best guess one of these popular Cartomania pictures...........

    https://www.npg.org.uk/collections/tell-us-more-about-silvy-daybooks

French-born Camille Silvy (1834-1910) established his photographic portrait studio at 38 Porchester Terrace in London's Bayswater in 1859, operating at the height of the carte-de-visite craze (popularly nicknamed ‘cartomania’) in the early 1860s, and remained there until 1869. During that time, he welcomed thousands of sitters and gained a reputation for his skilfully composed and finely produced photographs.

Style of the day. Just a random "dude" I'd think. Sad he's become separated from his descendants. Someone loved him.

I have been saying for several years that the cameo market has gone wonky. The prices being asked for mediocre pieces are absurd. Part of the problem is the price of gold.

I used to pick up portrait cameos of men for very little, especially if they were unmounted. Now they're surprisingly high.

I think and based on the link of Cameo's that you showed, the obvious ones of good quality are most ikley to be important, but that people just dont know and then if a famous person is on a lesser quality one it gets passed up unbekownst.

P.S I really like the ones with the hair so carefully sculpted.

You did not need to be important to get a good shell cameo portrait of yourself, you just needed the money & to know where to find a good engraver. Your tourists' guide to Rome helped you with that, for example:

    Filippo Tignani was more skilled:

Even the famous Saulinis did tourist portraits for their bread & butter. This one is by Tommaso:

There were photography studios near the workshops where you could get a photo portrait for the engraver to use.

Have you tried opening up the back?
Maybe there's an inscription on the back of the photo.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

That's what I was just thinking. Looks like it might be cut down from a rectangular photo portrait. But maybe not. What is the size?
