    Hoping someone might know about this basket.

    Hi Kath! I've had a few of those. Probably Japanese sewing basket.

    They usually have Asian characters painted on the covers....as yours appears to have also.

    Judy, really? It only stands 2 1/2" with the lid on. I have seen bigger sewing baskets that were noticeably Japanese. I thought this was different.

    Yes, I've seen and had those types also. They usually had beads and "bracelets", with tassels attached.

    The small size could be for jewelry, buttons, sewing threads, needles....bobbins, etc.

    I found (googled) a tray woven in the same way as yours......I don't think a style was mentioned. This style makes the basket, tray, whatever, very sturdy.

    Google Japanese sewing basket and you might find a few.

    But, of course, I could be waaaay off base, so wait for others.

    @kraftblue,
    I wasn’t sure if you checked on your old soda fountain container thread. I attached a similar listing.

    Judy, looks like it.

    I need help. Haven't looked lately. I listed it with only 1 watcher. No big loss I guess.

    Kath....it also reminds me of the Chinese baskets to hold a teapot. Sturdy.

    I would agree that the basket was most likely woven in Indonesia, Lombok to be specific. Whenever you see this type of material, coiled, with single rod construction, and that distinctive start with the stitches radiating out from the little hole in the center...99% of the time it's from Lombok.

    Which is not to say that the basket, although made in Indonesia, could have been purchased and painted somewhere else.
