I've no idea, other than to ask/suggest... is it perhaps meant to represent a rooster?

It's Italian. I know there are some threads on this site about the rooster mark. Will take a look around and update this answer with what I find.

That's what I was thinking. Rooster cockerel etc. Google didnt help with those search terms.

The rooster is typically a "Cantagalli" mark - but there are a number of people/makers that have used it since - some to deliberately deceive.

That's cool. I'm not expecting it to be worth much with the damage anyway. It has a chip and a hairline. Just curious. It looks quite old looking at the foot rim.

Crikey. It goes for a fair few quid doesn't it.

I have no idea how to authenticate it - you may want to read/search around on Walter Del Pellegrino's forum site about italian pottery marks here:

    https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/italianpotterymarks/?sid=ec54b6cc4770277588f7aee86d9b93c3

Walter was a regular poster on Antiquers as well- and was extremely knowledgeable and generous with that knowledge. I know he published at least one book on Italian pottery marks, maybe more.

Thanks for the link. There seem to be lots of different cockerel marks so quite tricky

IIRC, genuine Cantagalli marks have the rooster facing one way only -- now right or left, I can't remember.:(
