I purchased this small bowl, I fear as another mistake, because it was supposed to be Stevens and Williams. The first thing I noticed after I got it was that the pontil scar was not polished and the lines did not seem to be hand engraved. I have been studying the pattern books from the Antique Stourbridge Glass site but frankly there is a lot of information, and I don't know the language of glass making, so I'm not getting very far yet.

I bought this before I decided I shouldn't be allowed to search on my own and signed up to learn. I need help. It's a pretty bowl none the less. It is 5 1/4 in diameter including the rigaree and 2 1/4 inches high. Any thoughts will be welcome.

Almost certainly Stourbridge made, but as to who.....! Rigaree indeed with trailed milk glass, not engraving. Hand done. Crimped feet. And there's almost always a bit of trail missing.

OMG. Im so excited I am jumping out of my seat. And I have access to the pattern books so I can look. Astonishing that is trailed milk glass. Thanks for the language. It is helping immensely in looking at the site. Thank you thank you thank you.

When I find anything anywhere close to similar, it's either marked made in China or broken. Congrats on finding a good one!

The lines each appear to be hand etched into the glass to me.
Do you think the acid to etch these was mechanically applied onto the blown glass?
It's a beautiful piece, no matter which way you face it! :)

I didn't find it in the usual place. I am embarrassed to say I saw it on 20th Century Glass and thought it was sanctioned by them, so I bid on it. Later @TallCakes disabused me of that notion, but it was too late. I had already bid on it. I figured it was okay, but the seller put an artificial first bid and I was the only other bidder. It cost more than a third of what I paid for shipping, so I ended up paying an arm and a leg. It's okay though now I know its Stourbridge at least.

I thought it was engraved even after I looked at it. But OBB is right. It is applied. Thank you for your thoughts.

THreading is a good word, too. The jug on that link has a celery handle.

What does having a celery handle mean. Is that another term or does that point to another time?

A celery handle is that style of reeded glass, if that makes sense? Looks a bit like a stick of celery! Used from, oh, at least the early 19th. I think the oldest one I've seen was about 1800 ish. Very common on Victorian items, but it went on. Whitefriars used them.

OKay. Then I know what you mean now. I have two matching pitchers with that kind of handle. Thank you.
