Hi, I have a spoon engraved with "Damascus March 17th 1898" on the bowl. There is a monogram on the back of the spoon otherwise there are no other marks.

I tested it and it test positive for silver, but I can not test for the fineness of the silver.

Does this look familiar to anyone? I tried Google with but didn't come up with anything :(

What does it say on the back at the very top of the design???

And what is the top of the design? (Appears to be three feathers.)

Marie mentioned a monogram in her OP, Aquitaine and although I cannot read it in the larger size, that's what it looks like.

    A very pretty spoon, Marie!

Yes, it is monogrammed on the top back. The top front is 3 feathers, let me take a shot...I'll be right back :)

Here is a down and dirty shot of the top, front and back. DH made off with the camera to take snow pictures so I had to use my phone...

March 17, 1898 isn't an important date in the history Damascus. I suspect this spoon was a souvenir an **English** speaking tourist with the initials "ML?" acquired on a Middle East tour. On this date she was probably in Damascus. The tourist probably had it engraved herself. She may have had spoons engraved from other cities she passed through.

Agree motif palm fronds, not feathers.
