Featured Silver pierced footed bowl with glass insert.

    I'm sure this bowl never started out like it is.
    Anyone know, what , why , when ?

    It has a glass insert that fits perfectly.

    The inside base of the bowl has a round insert that has been soldered in and is not silver.

    The outer base has a larger more oval insert again soldered and not silver with two holes drilled into it.

    The item test positive for silver and I think the marks might have been where the inserts have been put in.

    Davey, does it look like a pyrex bowl? Pyrex did a range of serving dishes with metal mounts. If so, should have a lid. Not sure without seeing it first hand.

    It is thick glass but no markings.

    Just had another thought, the area that has been covered with the soldered piece might have been already open for use with a candle or burner to keep food or liquid warm, but I've never seen a silver one.

    Based on the size, I think it would make a beautiful wine coaster. You could see if a wine bottle fits into it. BTW, was watching 60 Minutes last night and they had a segment on the emerging wine business in England which has very good growth potential. Climate change is driving temps up which favors English grapes and disfavors French grapes. It was very interesting.

    I think this is the candle base to a casserole. Ceramic covered dish fits directly over the vented bottom. I don't think the glass belongs at all. My mom had one like this. I may be way off base but that's what my head says.
