I love these, would be so heavy to wear though, couple of small stones missing.
1 inch wide. I can make out the 925, London import mark and V date letter but wondering if anyone knows the other mark. CPLD Likely retailer or makers mark? I’ve drawn it out as it’s hard to see. Thanks for any info.

IMport sponsor mark, so probably retailer.

That’s what I thought too. Hoped it might be the maker rather than a retailer as OBB mentions above.

Because they were gilded as first I thought they were costume in the chazza, then saw the 925 stamped and only saw the other tiny marks when I got home.
    Good buy for £1.50.

Houseful! I love your little token icon! Is it an English tradesmans token? tell me more... or a gaberlunzie?

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

@Houseful, did you see the other less obvious marks that are also there.....
and true, they may mean nothing.....I put a red arrow at the one in the darker area- LOWER LEFT, but there are also some letters below the 3 stamped marks....maybe you can see them better...........

If it's a decent retailer, it's still good.

It’s one of the first things I posted on Antiquers. Handmade I assume German brass wall hanging box. The German text talks about a forest a table and woodpecker. Never really got to the bottom of it Leslie but it looks like a commemorative item for a shoemaker. Jumble sale buy.
No idea what a gaberlunzie is!

I don't see a table (Tisch) or a woodpecker (Specht).

On the ribbon it says privilegirte (privilegierte) Schumah (Schuhmacher?) Tafel. If it says "Privilegierte Schuhmacher Tafel", it means something like "Privileged shoemaker board", presumably something to do with a guild. If it is a guild, the crest and the boot make sense.

As far as I can read the outer text, it says the owner's name is Math(ias) Knisner.
It mentions a 'Formund' (guardian). Maybe the person who presents Mathias Knisner to the shoemaker's guild for membership?

It is a very special item.:)
The Scottish term for a licensed beggar in former times. Licensed beggars had tokens issued by the town council to prove they were allowed to beg in a town, so people could give them something if shown the token.

    Mathias Knisner was no gaberlunzie.;)

I did try to decipher the text myself (failed) and I was told by someone a bit better informed than me that some of the spellings were odd and she just got stuck. I took the word Knisner as woodpecker because it was similar to Knysna and thought the person was Dan Balt. Think I got Forest correct. I would like to know more about it, thought maybe the recipient was given something like a key to the workshop in the box.
I was going to contact a shoe museum here in U.K. but the website was down being reconstructed at that time and then I forgot about it so I’ll see if it’s up and running again.
It’s hanging up here, one I want to keep as I think it’s special too.

Forst is a town in Germany, in the east near the Polish border.
So Forst could be the town, not a forest. And 'Forster' could be pertaining to the town of Forst.

    https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forst_(Lausitz)

Understandable. It is certainly difficult to find the meaning of each and every word, especially because it isn't present day standardised German. You'd probably need someone from the Lausitz region of Germany to make more of it than I did. The Lausitz is on the other side of Germany as seen from where I live, I am more familiar with dialects from the western border.
I only know Knysna as a South African town?
Dan isn't a very German sounding first name.
I think it contained something more formal. Maybe a certificate saying that he was a member of the guild.
I'll see if I can find a museum in the Lausitz. Our local museums know all about our guilds, so I'm sure a museum or archive there will be able to tell you more.

I found another German town named Forst, in Baden. There could be more.
I'm off for dinner, will take another look tomorrow.

Thanks AJ. I saw Joseph Rudy Formund there as a name. I agree Dan doesn’t sound very German.
I’ve just emailed UKs Northampton Shoe museum and will contact a shoe museum in Germany tomorrow.

    Wonderful.
I don't think anyone would call themselves Rudy on a formal item. Maybe Rudi as an abbreviation of Rüdiger, because there was no space for the full name. 'Formund' is probably the same as the modern German word 'Vormund' a guardian or someone who can vouch for someone.
I can imagine a Vormund acting as a person who sponsors, presents, or can vouch for a new member to a guild.

I think I owe it to the piece to find out as much as I can about it as the maker must have spent a long time making it. Plus I think others would like to see it and decipher the words. I will let you know when/if I get a reply.
