Hi all, I’d like your opinion on this bracelet please. Tests as silver but not sure if plated. Filthy dirty but I *think*I can see a very small proper hallmark but it is very rubbed and at a difficult angle to get a good look being on the inside. Like to know era and origin of possible if known please? Thanks as always. 328442D9-59B7-4190-B55B-053A41B8FC96.jpeg C20A3120-E0BC-4E9E-86AD-DE7B5907C541.jpeg 1DA3F694-789A-44BB-9E8B-13F712EA8B52.jpeg 4CF0B514-7686-44CA-9CE2-1CC66E7F2E2D.jpeg 7D5BF6CA-D22E-4B09-B8CA-878B16237274.jpeg E7157DF3-B7F7-478F-B414-9914792D0BF2.jpeg 747B458B-B58E-4B48-9B4B-57518DEA4E88.jpeg

Need a good clean and polish ;) The mark may be more visible after!
The "stones" are glass, and it is very appealing as they are all different:)

Agree, they all look like glass apart from the darker blue one.
I think it is plated- it is a hallmark but the only ones I can clearly see are a bell and what looks like a sideways on y or j.

Looks plated- maybe on copper? There’s a hint of red creeping through under the hallmark. Y or J far right. Then a bell. I’ll work on the others!

Egyptian. The 'bell' is a lotus blossom, the Egyptian national mark for silver used 1946 onward. The Arabic letter on the far right indicates the date. The cartouche on the left will be fineness & assay office. Most common fineness on silver made for the tourist market is 800; the mark for that looks like an upper case lambda followed by 1 or 2 dots. (Occasionally the dots are between the legs of 'lambda'.)

Brownen- you are amazing!. I’ve just looked up the lotus flower and there it is!. I’ll have to research the date letter.
I’m confused though, a plated piece surely wouldn’t be hallmarked for silver, even 800?. Or if it’s not plated, why would I be able to see some faint red under high magnification?

My best guess it that it's the 1962-65 mark. I'm not seeing the reddishness that is catching your eye. I sometimes see gold washed silver, but never silver-plated anything.

This is the date letter but I can’t track it down yet! 035332E5-BD73-4736-BEA8-9BCB4EF4DD73.jpeg

The reddish spot is on the clasp, where you would expect wear. I can’t get a photo as I’ve given it a bit of a polish and it reflects.Ill try in daylight. I’d assumed it was under the silver plate but I’ve just given it a gentle scratch and it’s silver underneath the red patch so it looks like something on the silver (solder?) rather than under. Swinging back to it being proper silver now! . Did that make sense?!

Possibly a smudge of dried silver polish?

The 1968-75 mark is another possibility & may be the likelier one, given the glass stones. Arabic is such a delicate script. When converted into a metal punch, letters that are differentiated by a single loop or dot can be impossible to tell apart; the loops turn to blobs & dots run together.

As usual Bronwen, you are spot on I think. That didn't even occur to me!. It's practically welded on but this one is going to be a long term polishing job anyway so I will work on it!. I don't know where it's been but thick layers of encrusted dirt in all that intricate silver are really hard to shift.

Could this ‘stone’ be Lapis? It’s the only opaque one and has a different feel to it. Slightly odd to put one random stone in amongst the glass though I admit!

That's an exact match for the one in the bracelet-Thankyou for taking the time to help.Makes total sense that it is glass rather than one random stone. Every day is a learning day!

I ran through the same thoughts yesterday & came down on the side of glass, on the 'would they mix glass & stone?' question. With the photo, now think lapis. A) Have never seen an Egyptian piece using art glass this way. B) The world is full of Egyptian silver & lapis jewellery. Artisans must have lapis cabs ready to hand all the time, or almost, & may get them as cheaply as, or cheaper than, the glass. And, no, I don't think they would have any reservations about mixing.

Nice to have something unusual . And yes I can see your point about Lapis being easily obtained.
Is there a name for the plaited silver decoration or is it just plaited silver?!.
Thankyou for sharing your knowledge so generously-I've learned so much about this bracelet.
