I bought this off Facebook marketplace.
It is the symbol of the governor general of Australia.
According to Wikipedia the flag change to this design from 1936 and then changed again and 1953 to the crown that Queen Elizabeth uses.
It is a thick aluminium plate so it must have been a sign on the governor generals residence.
Interestingly the painted coat of arms looks older than 1936 in terms of its style. IMG_20210618_150557_compress83.jpg

Why must it have been on the governor general's residence? Surely there were other buildings & offices for which it would have been appropriate?

I did wonder about that. But it's specifically the GGs crest. So it would only be on places he had some ownership or occupancy of.
Its not the Australian govt coat of arms

The chips in the black area I'm going to put some black paint on.
It would look much better and even if someone did look at it closely and see that it had been retouched it wouldn't be a massive issue but I am not going to do any retouching of the chips in the actual crest.
