    Hi all,
I bought this wood box here in California at a Ukranian thrift store.
    It measures 8 1/4" wide x 4 3/4" deep x 3 1/4" tall.
There are two sections inside. the larger is 5 3/4" x 3"
As you can see it is painted on the sides all around with what looks like torches?
The top is leather that is attached with the brads.
    I am wondering,
    1. What was it for?
    2. Where did it come from?
    3. How old might it be?
    Thank for looking.
    Mikey

It looks like a souvenir from Egypt, possibly late 19th century.
Is it lined with cedar? Maybe a cigarette box with a compartment for matches?

Thank you for your reply @Any Jewelry
My initial thoughts were cigarette or candle box
I think the lining is cedar also.
That would be really awesome if it was really that old.

It is an intriguing box, and the leatherwork is very nicely done. I hope someone can find out more about it.:)

I don't think it's all that old. Ciggies weren't popular until after WWI really, and the paint on the box looks like it was done in Italy. The wood lining looks more 30s than 1890s at least from here. I'd bet some kid kept treasures in it at least for a while.

I'm in the camp of "not that old"... 20th century, at least.

Thank you all very much for your replies!
Would it be safe to use the term Egyptian revival?
    1888- 1930 I think.
    Could the woman be Cleopatra?

Those are rosette upholstery tacks on the lid. They are still available today. Those look like a later addition. I agree with the 20th century dating.
