I do love scrimshaw. No way am I ever going to get my hands on an antique piece, but today this piece came up by E. K. Tiulana, who I gather was a carver from King Island. While the work on this piece is very skilled, I can't find anything about him. I see the Tiulana name on carvings. Is this Eugene? Does anyone have any ideas? It is 3 3/4 inches tall and 2 3/4 inches wide.

Certainly looks like walrus; the black ring might be baleen.

Alaska is outside my field of expertise but as has already been mentioned it is walrus ivory and baleen.

Thank you anyway. Maybe I'll try King Island.

I contacted Artic Spirit Gallery about the artist and here is what they sent me:

"Yes we do carry artwork by Eugene Tiulana. He does sign his work E. K. Tiulana. Yes, he is from a King Island family of ivory carvers. Right now we have a few rookeries and none of his scrimshaw work. Here is a link to his information on our website: https://www.arcticspiritgallery.com/eugene-tiulana/
I have attached a bio for you to refer to. I hope this helps. I also found this on the web: https://www.antiquers.com/threads/scrimshaw-walrus-tusk-e-k-tiulana.76104/ that may be similar to the work you have.*
We are always updating our website so check it out!

*It is ironic, they found my post. The bio is below.
