    Hello
I came across a scrimshaw shell piece. I wonder if anyone could tell me if this an old original piece or just new reproduction?

To me the ink looks like new without age marks but am not expert.

The artist's hand appears to be modern.

Looks like to me like it was done on a young giant clam. I can't imagine what the point would be in making a replica.

I don't know is it's still around, but there used to be a site about scrimshaw that had a list of names.

And here's the source of your image, according to the internet. A painting 'Miltiades -- Ships off the Dover Coast' by J. Spurling. 1927.
