    Hi dear Members,

Hope you all have a nice weekend;)

I bought today this Satsuma teapot. It is around 12,5cm height.
On one side there is Geisha scene, on the other - birds and bamboo on cobalt background.

If my research is correct, then the mark says it is Maruni work? However, as I understood, Maruni mark was used by several different makers...

So I would be grateful if someone could confirm that it is Maruni (or not).

    Thank you!

Yes it says Maruni on the base in kanji. This one looks pre 1900, probably around 1880 or so. The scene is a family visiting one of the lakes around Mt Fuji, family visiting scenes are quite common. The women depicted are not Geisha.

Oh, thank You Ce BCA for help! And thank you for advising what kind of scene it actually is (bad for my mistake), it's very interesting :)

Thank you for saying that. I have corrected that in umpteen posts in the past, because it is incorrect and can be regarded as offensive.
Geisha is a specific profession, and not all Japanese women are Geishas.

This is not a dig at you, nastina, I know many North Americans use the word to mean Japanese women, and you probably didn't know any better.

Geishas are rarely depicted on Japanese ceramics, in fact I have never seen a Geisha on ceramics, only on Ukiyo-e.
Geishas can be recognised by a specific way of wearing the kimono, with a low neckline at the back, as well as specific hairstyles and make up.

You’re absolutely right, it’s really important to indicate it correctly and I can’t agree more.
As I said, it’s just my mistake made by a lack of knowledge in this topic and I hope I haven’t offended @Ce BCA

And thank you @Any Jewelry, as I didn’t know that Geisha are rarely shown on ceramics (now I know) and it’s such a great and important info! It shows how much more I need to learn)

Not at all, and no need to apologise I was just giving the correct information for you. When I write short form without much explanation it's usually because I'm in the middle of something else - but if I don't reply there and then I forget to do it later.
