    hi folks

bought this nice satsuma charger today from our village antiques shop. wasnt exactly cheap (£30) but rather liked it

im guessing meiji era but not sure

nice big elaborate mark on the back

all damage free, except a tiny missing paint bit where a plate holder was (have taken off)

any help on this would be great

    thanks

    According to https://orientalantiques.co.uk/ja/未分類/日本の磁器のマーク/ :
長州山 – satsuma style pottery inscribed 大日本 ‘Dai Nippon’ 長州山作 ‘Choshuzan saku’ 薩广国 實生院画 ‘Satsuma kuni Jissei-in ga’ 義定筆 ‘Yoshisada hitsu’ – Great Japan, Choshuzan workshop, painted by Jissei-in after a design by Yoshisada.

Looks like there's crazing on the back but not on the front? If so, that would be a red flag for me.

Is the maker's mark, if that's what it is, on the back painted on or a sticker? If painted, why didn't the crazing reach to there? If a sticker, why put on after crazing has occurred?

good question, its painted on so guess the crazing was there from the start

so could be chinese imitating satsuma

i bought it on the quality of the work, without questioning anything else which may have been short sighted

I love it. Especially the crazy red man! That crackle glaze does look forced and emphasised though and not like the subtle crackle in satsuma. I wouldn't have picked up on this if others hadn't mentioned it.

EDIT I reckon it's worth 30 quid even if it's repro so not a dead loss

thanks mate, yeah it fooled me if it is some kind of repro, given the quality of it.
im starting to think that yellowed glaze on the bottom is trying to imitate pottery when in fact it might not be

I'm pretty sure it's ceramic. Think the yellowing is just to make it look old.

It's hard work sometimes when you're in a shop with people bustling about. Prized possession jammed tight in armpit as you frantically Google what it is one handed. Do you go for a pint and do some level headed research, come back and it's gone? Or do you grab it and run off into the shadows, two fingers aloft shouting 'its all mine!'.

Looks okay to me - I'm not too sure this type of Satsuma ware is faked often (or ever really) - but I'm no expert :)

Okay. Here's a comparison. I have a small satsuma dish. Its value is negligible so we can take it that it's authentic as there is no point in faking it?

Looking at it, it has crazing where the glaze is exposed, but not where the signature is on the back or where the pattern is painted on the front. So maybe we can bin those arguments. My only issue is the dark crackle in the glaze which looks a bit false to me. But again, I'm not expert. It could be the real deal Send photos over to Bonhams. They are very helpful.

I don't think that it's a fake. It looks to be hand painted.
