Bird looks like a quail, if that helps search.

I had an argument with some people on FB that suggested Mexican and more specifically Tonala pottery. Especially when someone mentioned that this pot was burnished.
I guess the main reason for those suggestions was the bird that to some look like the one seen on Mexican pottery. To me, it looks like a bird drawn in folk style, not necessarily Mexican.
I may be wrong but salt glazed finish is not common for Mexican ceramics.
It could be a Mexican bird motif but in my opinion this is an American pot.

I wouldn't know enough to argue for Mexican, it just struck me as having that look. Hence my "maybe".

I see a couple of his brothers on ebay, but they aren't marked, either.

It looks more Scandinavian to me.

I agree, the original piece does look "more Scandinavian." And I would suspect more mid century modern/1960s. The ebay vase appears to be a rather sloppy copy, made more recently, in China.

I have seen both, but I can't recall where the original was from...but I would start the search with the Scandinavian countries. I believe the ones I saw were on stoneware jugs, not vases, if that's any help.

I can see that the one on ebay is sloppier, but my question would be why copy this?

That’s interesting. Not necessarily a copy as in faked, maybe it’s a famous design that was reproduced by artists with different level of skills.

Did some googling but the term “Scandinavian” is a bit too broad. Some Belgium makers made salt glazed pottery but not a lot from Denmark, Norway, Sweden... Couldn’t find a style match from the Netherlands.
Germany is a good candidate. Giefer Bahn, Elfriede Balzar-Kopp, Wim Mühlendyck and few other names pop up but have not found an exact match.
