Found this guy recently. A good size and a good price. 8.5" (21cm) tall, 8"-ish wide. It has a concave bottom. The glaze is imperfect; some spots seem raised / unglazed and some seem like depressions / spalling (perhaps). The glaze does not reach all the way to the bottom for most of the jar.

Where is this from? Is it old?

    Thank you as always!

I can't say for sure. The rim / lip seems like the rest of the jar: some rough spots, some smooth spots. There's not obvious wear as from a lid.

It seems like a utilitarian piece, in which case a lid would almost hafta be needed.

    Perhaps something soft, like cork.

Great jar, Pottery. I love Asian utilitarian ceramics.
They used those wooden lids for some pots, but they also used wooden 'plugs' with additional cloth to close off any small gaps. So a cloth on top of the jar, and then push the plug in.

    Thank you!

The shape of the jar does remind me of Chinese porcelain.

I found it in a resale shop on the Oregon coast.

Love it. I have a soft spot for kitchen ming and Asian utilitarian wares. I wonder if the top could also be covered with cloth or similar and tied with string or raffia under the lip? My brain is floating up a vague image...

Cheesecloth and a string would work fine for some things. It would keep dry contents from spilling and keep the flies out.
