Bought this today from the local mall. It was advertised as carved granite but I believe to be jadeite. I wish they used more of the chunk for carving. No idea how old if old at all it can be.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

No idea about the mineral composition, but it's not old.

I don't think it's jade either. It's a mechanical carving, not hand done, and the stone looks like a lot of things I've seen recently coming out of China. It's a pretty piece of rock but there's no age on it. Someone who really knows jade may be able to tell you more about it.

Real jade are only jadeite and nephrite.
By not carved by hand I guess you mean the piece was worked with power tools.
    Jade was never really "carved".
The only method of working it is to grind away the unwanted portion with an abrasive. Early jadesmith used tubular bamboo grinders and strings moistened with fine, wet sand as an abrasive. They used lap wheels, diamond drills, wire saws and othet tools. Later, they used emery as abrasive and now carborundum together with power tools.
