Rolled gold locket

    It's a bit battered. Not sure if it's Victorian or Edwardian? Also, can anyone tell me what the lines that look like Roman numerals that are often inside old lockets mean please? I can't find any info about this but I've noticed them on many pieces and it drives me nuts not knowing.     could just be marks left by the owner...seller....or repairman/jeweler..
