Hi George, and WELCOME to ANTIQUERS!!! Looks like a highly urethaned or varnished rocker, but am unsure of terminology on it.....other than the bentwood arms....and the design being pressed into the wood backing.....

And sniped by INH!!!:p:D...she's faster than me!!! All good!!!

George, can you flip it over and show the underside, please....that would be helpful.....I'm thinking the well worn leather seat is a replacement for a caned seat...

Yes, refinished. Ca. 1910, pressed wood as mentioned above. Leather could be original. Unfortunately, I believe it was Komo that mentioned in another thread (or maybe it was James) that you can hardly give rockers away these days...just no demand.

Unless there's a tag or label of some sort, it's virtually impossible to give a manufacturer's name to a chair like this.

Ghopper is right on the money again. Shiny finish does not help this.

And it IS a nice piece to keep, especially knowing it came from a grandparent!!:):)

Actually, George, I have one of similar vintage from my great grandmother. I've refinished it and repaired the seat. At a garage sale or, really, any other kind of sale, I'd expect to get about $20-$25.00 for it here in the U.S. midwest. Sadly, without any refinishing or repair I might just as well have tossed it in "the tip," as our English friends say.

But like you, I'm not interested in whatever paltry $ it would bring.

I'm curious to see the underside. If it has drilled holes, it was hand-caned, but I would not expect that from this factory mass-manufactured chair. More likely, if you carefully lift a corner of the leather seat, you may find a routed channel underneath to accommodate a piece of machine-caning, long blown-out by use.
I would recommend some experimental re-amalgamation to clear up that muddy finish and allow the beauty of the wood grain to glow again. There may be some oak under that, I think I am seeing ash grain in spots. :bored:
