I have never been able to identify subject, For some reason I always thought it might be Russian, until I unearthed it last week, and saw the writing Top word translates from Spanish to English as Charity, bottom word I cant find any translation? It id a little beat up as you can see, and is a little darker in reality, eight inches by 12 inches. As always many many thanks

I'm clueless on that second word too.

Is he (whoever he might be) holding something to his chest? Like a bird with a red beak?

Caridad is also a first name, so may be looking at name of artist rather than a clue to subject. He appears to have a bishop's crozier. I don't see a halo, but a lot of Catholic saints were bishops.

I suspect it says "Caridad y Bondad." Thanslates to Charity and Kindness, a phrase used to describe acts of Catholic faith.

Is he holding something, or does he just have his hands crossed over his heart?

    Was thinking Saint Benedict...

This is supposed to be Saint Jerome. Very similar in depiction.

I'm all in on St Frances de Paola -- flaming sun with "caridad" is his thing.

    EDIT: Corrected Spelling. :)
