I am researching a painting I picked up last year and was wondering if anyone might be able to help identify the artist. The painting is clearly in the style of Renoir and well done. It is not a copy of an existing Renoir and neither does it exist in the catalogue raisonnee by Bernheim Jeune. Painting is oil on linen (which has been lined) and measures 25cm x 19cm which is about the size for a No. 2 portrait canvas. I bought the painting unframed hence it has a modern frame.

Yours is a reproduction of an original painting. Zero brushstrokes. Also you can tell by the thin board laid on top of the linen.

It's just made to look like an original.

Actually more like a thin board than paper

Not sure, I think I can see thicker white paint areas.

DSC_0029pdsmallest.JPG No it is linen laid on linen (I am an artist and paint on linen). I have lifted the corner and can see the weave. There are brush strokes and texture definitely oil paint (on blouse, rose, highlights and other areas). Not a copy of any existing Renoir but definitely in the style of Renoir. The stretchers are late 19th C early 20th C and use a different style of mitering.

What it is it's a reproduction touched with live hands on some areas with paint and the rest is machine printed on . Look at the womans face for example. Super flat no brush strokes at all. The people who made this lay paint on some areas but not all to make it look real. The wood in the back of the canvas isnt old. Its just made to fool people.

There is a thin layer of paper or board GLUED to the top of the linen

It is NOT machine printed. No dots I have looked under a loop - it is paint. I have also had prints done of my work (Michael Short aviation art). I do know the difference.

Ok if it's real why would it be GLUED on? It's not real made to look old/original. The wood in the back isnt even old.

Some history on the painting: I purchased it for $150 from the son in law of artist Norio Azuma who passed away a few years ago. I am not sure where he acquired it but wish I knew. I have checked Looted Art websites as well as stolen art sites. Contact with the Stern Pissarro suggest I contact the Wildenstein Plattner Institute but I am not keen to do that unless I can find anything to add to the provenance.

It is called "lining". Have you not heard of this? When a painting gets old the fabric can deteriorates where it curves around the edge of the stretcher. The original painting is cut and glued with a wax mixture to a new lining. Many old paintings including Impressionist works are lined.

Art linen paper. The wood on your canvas isnt even old.

You are still telling me that you won't accept that I don't know a painting from a canvas giclee? Last time - I know this is a painting and it is painted with oils! Close inspection reveals texture everywhere except where there are thin washes of paint like the background. It is not an art linen print! I cleaned the painting with picture cleaner (removed yellowed varnish) and it is oil paint. Man I cannot believe you. Please, I respectfully ask you to refrain from adding to this thread if you cannot answer my original question about the artist. Thank You.
