    Hello Glass Experts,

I have acquired a set of depression glass oval 8 1/2" x 6 3/4" plates. Curious thing that they have an impressed oval on the inside of the plate. I am assuming that there would be another vessel, such as for a dipping sauce, that would be included in the presentation? The circular impression is maybe no more than 2mm in height.

Thanks for your help in identifying what this dish is used for. Bonus if you cna identify the maker!

I've seen many similar in china which had a cup to sit in that impression. Known as a tennis set. I wonder if these were the same idea.

I think this is Indiana Glass....Sandwich pattern. Made by other makers also, so wait for others.

I know Franciscan has different patterns of "Snack plate & Cup" offerings........... so I'm sure others took off with this idea (or Franciscan stole it from others -?)

    Hi,
My MIL had 35 sets like these. She used them for parties for girls who were getting married. God forbid that anyone used paper or plastic plates at her house!!!! Bridal showers were a big part of her social life. She was so glad when I came into her life, that way she had someone to polish the silver, iron the napkins. Then help wash the dishes and clean up.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

I am now pondering why we call these tennis sets.

For having tea where there were no tables to sit, such as Wimbledon (according to one unverified source).

Hm. In that case, it ought to be a cricket set. ;)

Boatloads of these snack/ luncheon sets, often with the original box, turn up at the local thrift and consignment stores. We just don't entertain like that anymore. It would be ecologically wise to go back to them, and keep the paper and plastic out of the landfills.

I avoid disposables like the plague. Never buy bottled water, if I need to, a small Thermos with ice goes in the car.

Yep, tennis sets. But, if designed to be held whilst standing, glass ones would have been quite heavy and a bit ungainly to manage with a full hot cup of tea on it. Pretty set, yours.
