Doclips Does it have a signature. Also not an expert, but that might help.

Is the picture of a British officer, if so how do you know.

    Or

Was it a sale of British officers items ?

It's a tavern scene, I assume. But, Doclips, we need a photograph of the entire work, including frame, both front and back. (The frame helps with dating among other things.)

JMHO of course, but it looks like an illustration from a book and therefore a print. Measurements?

The first thing I thought of when I saw it was a character from "A Christmas Carol" the old school movie one. BWDIK.

Ah... You're right. Wondered why something didn't seem quiet right. It does appear to be an illustration. That's a fairly elaborate frame for one though.

Very nice quality. Odd aspect though, likely from a sketch book, looks a bit like gouache on brown paper ....what is the medium in your opinion?

Evening everyone. It certainly could be brown paper. As suggested I've taken a photograph including the back and front of the frame and a close up of the subject's face. Thanks for your advice thumbnail_IMG_2769.jpg thumbnail_IMG_2768.jpg thumbnail_IMG_2767.jpg

It was a sale of items that belonged to a British Officer. I believe they were stationed in Canada as as well as this picture were 2 Victorian Kreighoff lithographs with the seller's name on from Montreal priced $2 each !

It's rather nice. Rather Hogarthian in feel. I'm afraid that, if you really want to know more, you'll have to open frame.
