Featured Quick one - Amethyst?

Do you think these earrings are Amethyst?. I thought just glass but then realised they are fully hallmarked for 9ct gold and wondered if more likely to be Amethyst?. Need to clean the hallmark more but a crown, 375 and a shield(?)

Very likely, but you will only know for certain if you have them tested.

 

Do I take them to a jeweller or is there a home test?

Amethyst is a quartz and has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale.

 

Amethyst is a fairly inexpensive stone and man made amethyst has been around for at least 40 years. Gem testers help with identification,but they cannot tell the difference between natural or man made. I'd bet it's amethyst, but whether it's been monkeyed with I couldn't tell you.

Thankyou, that's very interesting although not a lot the 'common man' can do to accurately identify the genuine if the jewellers can't!.
I think I will be holding on to them anyway so it's a moot point but obviously not a simple answer to what I thought was a quick question.

Quartz can be heat-treated, irradiated, coated ... etc, and that's just the real quartz.
