I found this old pocket knife in the jewelry box I brought back from my trip to Michigan. It looks like the blade has been sharpened numerous times. The Question is if that ruins the value? Also how should I go about cleaning the blade? There is no makers mark in it that I can see. However it odes have a Pat. No.(2037943)? on the blade. Can this help me find out more about it (age, Maker)? Where would I look? It has a pearl like handle. Any info or insights appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Growing up in the south during the 60s and 70s,EVERY man carried a pocket knife.I wonder when that stopped being a thing?

I would add that knife to my few knives waiting for me to lose my current pocket knife , and then promote it to current pocket knife.

Against a plastic wrapped world, something sharp and handy is, in my opinion, essential.

German manufacture and a date in the 1930s seems quite likely. I'd say, not all that valuable, though. The period when virtually every man in the civilised world carried some form of pocket knife seems to have passed, and in some countries it is now illegal. The knives are mostly still around, though.

    I have one .
I first saw it in the late 70's......but it likely was older by then.

As I am female, I carried a nice pocket knife in my purse until metal detectors at the courthouses and airports made it too difficult to do so. I still enjoy keeping a large knife in my vehicle. Never know what I'll need a knife for but have used it plenty throughout the years! :cat:

I have a boot knife hooked to the drivers door right where my hand can grab it.
It's good in case you need to cut the seat belt in an emergency....or if some idiot wants to put their hand in my window to try and get at me !! :wideyed:

Thank You all for the replies~ The links are extremely Helpful! The 1930's german attribution makes sense with what little I know about it's origin, but the date fits with what I had assumed. Appears to be a fishing knife.
I would guess the sharping marks do not make a big impact in collectability or value.
I have oiled the blade, but it didn't do much toward cleaning it. I guess I should leave it alone and let some future owner decide how he wants to do that.
    Thank you all Again!

If it were new in box ,it might be worth something. With the broken tip and extreme "scuffing" on the blade probably no one would even give you $5 for it.

I remember having a knife like that year's ago. When i was fishing. For some reason I think it was a Barlow. Cant remember. I do know that the mind is the second thing to go. I cant remember the first.

Case knives are usually marked with a production date code - the manner of which I forget at the moment, and I'm not certain when they started the practice...............

    Now, wasn't THAT helpful.............
