I was researching this kava bowl I found and found one that says:

"Hand Carved Inlaid Mother Pearl / Abalone - Fiji Polynesia."

Not sure what those white triangles are made of.

Trying to age this piece. The label on mine that says "Treated Wood -- Made in Fiji".

I understand that they treated the word to prevent insects, perhaps due to customs.

Does anyone know when they started putting these labels on?

I didn't notice the label on wood items when I was last there, but that was in the early 1980s, back when they fumigated the whole plane, including passengers!

Traditionally, the white inlaid design has been done with Mother of Pearl.

I didn't see the size, which would indicate whether it was made strictly for the tourist trade, which I would suspect. That might account for the label.
