So I am cataloging a necklace that only bares the mark of Gasia which is over in the UK. It is oxidized silver and yellow gold with small white diamonds and hung with either amber acid carved or cameo type glass. Is there a way to test what it is? It really doesn't feel like glass but I am not sure if amber has a type of feel to it. Is there a correct name for this technique when it is done on a gemstone? I have a presidium tester but nothing is registering on it. Thanks so much! gasia.JPG gasia2.JPG gasia3.JPG

    That is stunning!
Amber is warm to the touch compared to glass. It is also very lightweight and it fluoresces in UV light. A small UV flashlight will do to test it.

Amber fluorescence, the fluorescence colour can differ depending on the amber colour:

Excellent info on the amber testing. If you still have questions, maybe as a back up, you could try emailing the company.

    You never know!

Are you sure that the black part of the chain isn't gold?

thanks so much! I just found my blacklight and it definitely fluoresces. Gasia is known for using oxidized silver mixed with yellow gold - usually 18K. I don't have my testing kit with me but will double check Monday.

I will test it Monday when I am back in the office. Does anyone know the process used to decorate the amber? It looks so much like acid cut in the cameo glass process.

It could be heated and pressed. That is the way they make most amber beads and many cabochons as well. Amber is fossilized tree resin and it becomes malleable when heated.

Good point on the chain. I've a UAE necklace, all gold, but the chain is literally multi coloured.
