Hello, when our son was younger he was left a group of medals from his great uncle. We have just dug them out to give him. Is this group bogstandard? He was a tail end Charlie in the RAF, a sgt... a 1939-45medal, 1939-45 defence medal, 1939-45 star, the Atlantic star, the Africa star with a bar that says North Africa 1942-3, the Italy star, and a Palestine medal that says on the rim he was in the Palestine police, B constab.
It is just so we can give him enough info when we give them to him. Thanks.

PS we also have a citizen quartz crystonic watch to give him. We don't know what he will make of that. It is so chunky. I remember my husbands uncle being so proud of the cutting edge technology. It was expensive in its day.

    Hi Popsy,

Yes the WWII medals are bogstandard and very common and unnamed, keep them together as a group.
You can research all British medals at this site, just scroll down and click the medal you need to read about.

The Palestine Police medal is the scarcest and probably the most valuable.
There is a Government website with all the details of the officers who served in Palestine.

I'm not Davey, he is probably off trucking somewhere (He loves to truck) but if you have any other documentation to go along with the medals it would enhance the value of the group considerably. Even a letter detailing what you can remember would be better than nothing. Old paybooks, discharge papers, diaries, etc can easiuly double the value of even routine groups.

It is not bogstandard, the Atlantic Star and Palestine medals enhance a routine war group.

komokwa The Truth is out there...!

tell him all you no about the great uncle...and that these items are family heirlooms to be passed down thru the family.....
their value is only secondary to that !

    Popsy.
Just to add, if he was in the RAF bomber command check the medals for "Air Crew Europe" they are the creme de la creme.

If he actually was a rear gunner, it may be possible to get a replacement clasp for air crew Europe if he was entitled to it./ (and it is missing, of course) I imagine some dusty office in the bowels of War House, now Defense Ministry, where some 100 year old clerks deal with these things. Do be aware that sometime supply sergeants or similar may romanticise their war records.

Do do the research, the records are mostly available online.
