This question is probably "silver 101" for many of you. Is this a silver mark? Also what is the function of this. For stamps?

Thin leather piece on the bottom, is marked both on the lid and base. 3 inches across or a bit more, fairly heavy at 160 grams.

    Thanks.

Absolutely a stamp box. I don't think it's British, though, that looks like one of your pseudo marks.

Help me here -- does that mean a fake? I rarely buy this kind of thing. In fact I almost didn't buy it at the estate sale, but was almost free, and was thinking of using it for a craft project. But then noticed what looked like a mark, polished up the area with the mark and noticed a 2nd identical mark on the lid.

I see the trefoil stamp in the cx's link -- but didn't see the lion followed by a P. Is that what is raising a red flag?

Learning here... thanks! All thoughts appreciated. :)

thanks bear, I was wondering about the lion, he looks a little off.
Lucille, the letter P would be the date mark, I believe it is the lion that is the clue, but maybe @Ownedbybear or @Bakersgma could say:)

I'm rushing off shortly to perform my turkey duties, but I don't see this as anything other than British. Definitely not US. If you are still investigating when I return, I'll be able to take a longer look. Happy Thanksgiving!

    Hi Lucille,
It is a wonderful box. I would use it in a minute except the stamps here are those
dang prefinished with that nasty paper. I would much rather have to lick stamps anyway. I have a brass box from India that is shaped just like yours except I keep
smelly stuff in it, I can not imagine trying to spell "poperee today:rolleyes:

Thanks, Bakers. Realize folks are busy today, sorry about that!

For others, this is the mark on the base. (Mark above was on the lid.)

This is the world's worst picture, hadn't polished it yet and do to blurriness didn't include the picture in my initial post. Can polish up and improve photo if helpful. Give me a few minutes.

Here are some better pics. Sorry about that, just included the stamp on the lid which maybe was misleading. Apologies if that was confusing. Here are additional photos of the base now polished up a bit:

Oh, that's better, the other mark had me confuzzled. Yeah. London 1910. Makers had an annoying habit of omitting the assay office, often, on multiply marked components.

It's definitely missing its glass bits. Odds are this held coils of stamps instead of singles.
