Dimensions might help with use. IT looks to me more marquetry than Boulle.

Nice ebony (might be ebonised), brass inlaid (not boulle) serpentine fall front box, French, late 19th c, rosewood interior. Like all boxes of this size they are called "glove boxes" but in the case it is a glove box.

    Lovely glove box.
    No tortoiseshell, so not Boulle.

Again I've got it wrong :( I always thought these boxes were made for gloves and this still might be the case with your box but in doing research for this thread I spotted a French lacquered Boulle box on ebay in the same manor as yours. I was just about to report my findings when I noticed who made it "Tahan of Paris", the bidding on this box hadn't gone high so I waited for a week to see if I could win it. Fortunately I managed to be successful so now I can say what I wanted to report a week ago. No they are not always for gloves, maybe they all had interiors and they have been damaged or lost over the years? Or maybe because this is by a fine maker (cabinet maker to Napoleon) I don't know. Anyway here are some photos of the only one I've seen with a interior for jewellery.

I'd have that on my dresser !!....nice find !!!
and yes..it opens up the conversation as to it's original use !!!!

    Size , please !!!

    Measurements:

    Length: 26.5cm

    Depth: 10.2cm

    Height: 8cm
Yes it does make it easy to identify and I've been bursting to correct myself in the last week but I couldn't put the name or photo on here as I would have had far more competition than I wanted ;) As it was I had to pay more than I wished but still cheap for what it was.
