Featured pretty painted butterfly saucer

    hi folks

    anyone have an idea of age or possible maker of this pretty painted butterfly saucer

    sadly no cup, but if i can find a maker, i might even look to buy a cup to go with it

    no marks at all

    any thoughts or info appreciated

    That’s early. As in late eighteenth into early nineteenth century. Might be Coalport.

    One clue is that the butterfly isn’t that correct in terms of lepidoptary. Accuracy depended on preserving specimens initially and then later photography. Painters in the era when this was made would have not had access to either.

    Very interesting OBB,yes-they almost look like fantasy moths or something.

    Very eye pleasing design. I would have bought that too, even without the cup, just to look at it all the time.

    You see the same rather fantasy images on early depictions of things like camels and exotic creatures. And indeed proper horse depiction with true gait wasn’t possible till photography.
