I went to an estate sale and on impulse picked this up for a buck. The former owner had traveled to China often on business and my guess is Japan too. This little jar/vase isn't signed and the glaze looks odd for American craft show pottery. What exactly did I find, besides a way to waste money?

Chinese export ginger jar, minus its lid. Early-mid 20th century.

Thanks. Probably worth about what I paid - a dollar.

Not a waste of money. I have a soft spot for these utilitarian wares.

maybe in terms of market value. But personally I think it’s quite beautiful. I love old utilitarian pottery.

I found that you can simply use a drill with a $3 glass drill bit from Home Depot to add holes. Then they make a lovely little planters outside (just bring in when it’s winter or they will crack).

    I wouldn't even dare try it; I'm a bit of a crackpot.
